Xtion PRO

Ok so some of you might know about connecting your Kinect devices to your computer through 3rd party software; if not, check out these videos for info, and now Microsoft is releasing their own SDK because they see the earning potential that the Kinect can bring to their company.

I guess now ASUS, who has probably been developing this product since hackers of the 3rd party SDK released their software, is releasing their own hardware version of the Kinect, called the Xtion PRO, in Japan.  Their website says Q3 2011 release but the website Unity Corporation, who is selling the product, states a mid April release which would mean any day now. I don't see any info on a US release but one would think it would only be a matter of time before that happened.

Here are some specs of the device taken from their own website:

  • Effective Range: 0.8-3.5m
  • Effective Accuracy: 70 degrees
  • Interface/Power Supply: USB 2.0 / Bus powered
  • Sensor: Depth
  • Support Platforms: Intel x86 & AMD
  • System Requirements: 32/64bit: Windows 7/Vista/XP, Linux Ubuntu10.10: x86-31, x86-64
  • Programming Languages: C++/C# (Windows), C/C++ (Linux)
  • Package Size: 230mm x 148mm x 80mm (W x D x H)
  • Accessories: Driver, Quick Deployment Guide

What do you guys think, Can devices like these find a use in the general public? Will these devices be the way of the future, or just live in a niche market?
